Gugliotti's Salon & Spa
Hip. Contemporary. Classy.

Don’t tell Argentina hairstylist Carmelo Gugliotti that the United States is not the land of opportunity. He risked his family’s future on that dream, and it has produced storybook results. In 1986, Gugliotti moved his wife and four sons to Hartford from Argentina, and opened up a barbershop in Hartford’s Little Italy on Franklin Avenue. “I saw the opportunities, and I took advantage,” Gugliotti recalls. Within four years, he tripled the shop’s size, expanding his business into a top hair salon to serve both men and women, and moved across the street into a larger facility. His four sons — Leonardo, Ariel, Martin and Damian — also are taking advantage of the opportunities connected with expanding their father’s business. Since 2002, the sons have started up three new enterprises related to their father’s salon, Gugliotti’s Hair Fashions.

On May 1, 2005 the Gugliotti family launched its own line of hair-care products, called Le’Marca. In October 2006, a second family hair salon in Rocky Hill opened. The Gugliottis continue to run their 10-chair salon on Franklin Avenue. These new ventures aren’t their first together. In 2002, the sons urged their parents to buy an 8,900-square-foot building on the Silas Deane Highway in Wethersfield so they could open a cosmetology school there. The brothers saw an opportunity to establish a flagship cosmetology school, called the International Institute of Cosmetology. The school offers both entry-level and advanced classes, prepares students for state certification exams, and offers instructions on domestic and international hairstyles and other salon-related services, says Martin, who serves as dean of the school. Martin, who has won three consecutive national hairdressing competitions and a second place in an international competition in Korea in 2000, earned an engineering degree in 2001 at the University of Connecticut. A licensed hairstylist since 16, Martin turned down engineering jobs upon graduation from the University of Connecticut to go into business with his father. Since then, his hair designs have been published in textbooks and trade magazines. “It is an honor for me,” says Carmelo, referring to Martin’s decision to go into the family business. But going into the family business wasn’t exactly what Carmelo had in mind for his sons. He insisted that all earn a college degree. And the sons did not disappoint.

While his sons learned from Carmelo’s hard work, in turn, they taught their father to be proud of his profession. “They said that being a hairdresser is a good thing, not a bad thing, that it is an art,” Carmelo Gugliotti says. His sons’ opinions about the cosmetology industry “made me change so much.” They helped him see that there were more business opportunities related to his business, including the cosmetology school that the family eventually opened. Established in 2002, the school counts about 100 students. Clients can make appointments for discounted services, including haircuts, color, pedicures, facials and massages.

While the Gugliottis were raising their sons in Hartford’s South End, Carmelo was winning numerous national and international hair styling competitions, and eventually began to judge them. Nine years ago, Carmelo was inducted in the National Cosmetology Association Hall of Renown, a hall of fame for hairdressers. He is past president of the National Cosmetology Association (NCA) of Connecticut, and vice president and general creative director of Organisation Mondiale Coiffure (OMC), a global hairdressers’ organization with members from 67 countries. “When somebody comes to this country, they see more opportunities than those who were born here,” he says. “I came with hunger and thirst for that opportunity.” Now we create top hair stylists in the Rock Hill near the Hartford, Connecticut area.
